ING Real Estate announced today that Nisa Liberec, one of the most successful shopping centres in the Czech Republic, has officially reopened after three years of extensive redevelopment work.

The shopping centre has been completely refurbished, doubling in size to 50,000 m2. Considerable effort has been put into the look and feel of Nisa Liberec. Architects from Atelier Ph5 and Atelier 8000 designed the new centre to reflect key modern architectural features while taking inspiration from the commercial architecture of the 1920s and 1930s.

The number of retail units at the Nisa Liberec shopping centre has been increased from 70 to over 160 and the extended car park now offers 1,800 parking spaces. The enlarged shopping centre has attracted numerous new retailers, and international brands consider Nisa Liberec as one the best opportunities to expand into the Czech market. The retail offer includes major international brands such as HyperAlbert, Marks & Spencer, New Yorker, Datart, C&A, Hervis Sport, Lindex, Reserved, Intersport, Bata, and Humanic. A new multiplex cinema with eight theatres and 1,200 seats will contribute to transforming the shopping centre into a major leisure destination. In total, 4,000m2 of leisure space was added with over a dozen restaurants and cafes.

The shopping centre will reinforce the regional economy with the creation of over 1,600 new jobs. With a population of almost 100,000, the city of Liberec is the capital city of a region with over 140,000 inhabitants. Being the largest shopping centre north of Prague and with direct access to the motorway, Nisa Liberec has always been a popular retail destination attracting more than 4.8 million visitors a year since it first opened in 1999.

Menno Maas, CEO Development at ING Real Estate, said “The refurbishment and extension of the Nisa Liberec shopping centre is a perfect example of how to maintain and add value to existing shopping centres. This total makeover has truly changed the shopping experience in the Liberec region and will enhance the popularity of  Nisa Liberec as a retail destination for both shoppers and leisure seekers. All over Europe there are shopping centres nearing their ‘sell-by’ date and our ambition is to repeat what we have accomplished for Nisa Liberec many more times elsewhere.”

The refurbished Nisa Liberec shopping centre will be added to the portfolio of ING Property Fund Central Europe.
